Republicans will retain control of Congress.
Now, at this point, you must be saying, "Billy, you're full of shit. Everyone fucking knows that the country is fed up with the GOP and will vote them out of office this November."
But I counter with this: Yes, more people will cast votes for Democrats this Novemeber 7 than Republicans. But Republicans will be declared the victors.

The United States' poltical system is broken. The people are not adequately represented by the current two-party system. What we have is a charade of two parties which, in reality, differ very little in terms of policy goals (if "maintaining the status quo" can be considered a
policy). The posturing before cameras by elected official and the screams of the various pundits aligned with this party or the other are nothing more than window dressing. Both parties have utterly failed to truly represent their repective "bases", preferring always to maintain more or less the same power structure (that is to say, the same people are always in the game, regardless of which party is controlling which branch of government) and to maximize corporate profits. It is the corporate world that has bought the people's representation, with the even-numbered-year elections providing the necessary veneer of democracy.

Have you ever wondered how the dKos community felt about a certain topic, but had neither the time nor inclination to write an entire diary so you could include a poll at the end of it?
My idea is this: to introduce a new section to the site, a Poll Section, very much like the Diaries section, but different. The polls section would be for polls only, with no comments being posted to them and no text provided by the author. It would simply be a poll, and nothing else.

It's common knowledge, accepted fact that the Bush Administration fucked up big time in dealing with Katrina. The extent of this fuck-up, and the degree to which blame should be shared with state and local governments are the subject of ongoing debate, and are not the subject of this diary. I just wanted to point out, before I get to the point, that the vast majority of folks, even previous unapologetic knee-jerk Bush apologists and shills, are calling Bush out on this one. So far, the Dems have not been doing a horrible job on the PR front, and for that I am sure that we are all very grateful (and maybe even a little surprised, eh?).
The point I want to make here is that in order for the Dems to capitalize on the current national Bush-hating fest, they need to come up with a plan. Something that is absolutely unheard of in today's political climate. Something that will make the people say, "Shit, now that's a good plan," and will force the GOP to shut the fuck up.

If you haven't heard, Sandra Day O'Connor, who I guess was a member of something called Scrotus, announced her retirement today. I don't blame you if you haven't heard about this, because it's getting like
zero coverage, especially here.
The only question left is, "Who is going to be nominated for the vacancy by Bush's puppetmasters?"

panic mode and is holding a press

tonight Tuesday. Of course we all know this is just a ploy to shore up some weak-ass poll numbers and to get his restless GOP shock-troops back in line. Most of us here probably would not watch it, because, let's face it, we all know what he is going to say (I need not go into it here), and frankly, watching the Chimp speak makes me physically ill and causes fits of rage.
But, maybe we can stomach it if we make a little fun of the whole charade. Maybe we should watch it, since we are after all liberals, and as such we require understanding of our enemies. And I don't know about you, but the only way I could watch an entire Bushspeak event is to be blindingly drunk.

The Christian Right is getting pissed off. For the most part, members of this nebulous group still regard George W. Bush as the greatest thing since sliced bread. However, there are indications that some are beginning to suspect what we knew along: they were used for their votes. Bush & Co. exploited the bigotry, ignorance and blind faith of the Christian Right to "win" "re-election", and those few members of the Christain Right who retain some semblance of independent thought are starting to ask questions. This is the chink in the armor, and Dems need to move in
now and blow this Coalition of the Willfully Ignorant apart.

This diary is preparation, research if you will, for a future diary I am planning to write regarding genetically modified organisms (GMO), with special emphasis on gentically modified crops. With this diary, my aim is to ascertain how Kossacks feel about this issue, through the use of the comment thread and the poll at the bottom. After my research is completed, I plan to "tell the story" of GMOs and their uses and abuses, the hype, the reality and expectations for the future. I have
no love for the evil, vile, despicable Monsanto corporation, and I will try to lay the blame for the current misconception GMO's currently enjoy at their and their ilk's feet.

My question to Pat Robertson, and a poll!

Pat Robertson's 700 Club show has a segment called "Bring it On", where Pat takes questions from normal people like you and me about really tough issues. Usually the questions asked by "people" are softballs that allow Pat to wax philosophical on his issue du jour. For example, recently Pat "wrote" a
"book" about his twisted views on the American Court system, and coincidentally most of the questions on "Bring in On" were about the Courts, which let Pat plug his book. Anyway, I was inspired by djtyg's
diary to contact Pat and maybe, just maybe, on the slightest possible chance (and because I have nothing better to do) I thought we may be able to get Pat to address this on his little "Bring it On" show. Futile, I agree, but if enough of us do it, then maybe, just maybe... well, you never know.

Senator Mark Pryor was on KASU (the local NPR affiliate) this morning via phone interview from his Washington DC office. These are some of the things that were discussed:
- War in Iraq
- Social Security privatization
- Bush's new budget proposal
- Condi Rice
Overall, I am not particularly pleased with Sen Pryor. Especially when one compares his words and votes with our (NE Arkansas) tough talking Representative, Marion Barry (not be confused with the crack smoking former mayor of DC). And his dim light became even more muted to me considering his "yea" vote to legitimize the policy of torture.

OK, its no secret: the GOP feels that before people wake up they need to ram as much of their dangerously disastrous agenda into law as possible. And in order to keep up the appearance of not being bullies (which of course we all know
appearance is all the GOP really cares about, aside from trying to destroy America), they need a Democratic face on their shenanigans.
Here is a decent blog entry by Claudia Long of the
Great Divide discussing just that. Basically, the GOP thugs do not want any input on their ideas: they already know exactly what they want. Instead they need the fig leaf of
bipartisanship in order for the public to swallow their pills.
The simple fact of the matter is that the GOP is in control. The least the Dems can do is put up a decent opposition. And as loathe as I am to admit it, that can not be done by writing new, good (relatively speaking of course) legislation, as it would never come out of committee or be stolen and perverted by the GOP. Americans Need a Shadow Government

This is not a new idea.
In order for the Democratic Party to regain true "opposition" status, instead of the "punching bag" status we currently enjoy, Americans need to see exactly what we would offer as an alternative. Again, these are not new ideas, but it seems it is going to take some kind of an uprising in order for the Democratic Party's leadership to get its head out of its ass, or perhaps a Festivus Miracle. My personal opinion is that placing Dean or Rosenberg at the Chairmanship will go a long way to accomplishing the type of real change needed. Well, its seems I may have gotten a little off track, because this is not another "I Love Dean" diary, but rather a diary to explore what the party should do once real change is/has taken place.

Dean and the DNC, w/ poll

I apologize if this has been already diaried, actually I'm sure it has, but in any case here's my two cents worth.
I know that just about everyone here wants Dean as DNC Chair. I know I do. I believe that his Chairmanship of the DNC will be the first step to reclaiming our party from the Clintonista Centrists that have given us nothing but defeat since 2000.
In the Independent (by way of SmirkingChimp) there is an article which talks about Dean's DNC aspirations. There is also much allusion to Dean's opposition, namely, the Clintonista Centrists.
So, at the risk of sounding cynical, I am wondering of the dKos community: What do we do if Dean does not win? I shudder to think about this, but I think we need to start to coming up with contingency plans. I want Dean to be there as much as the next guy/gal, and I for one will not give up. However, it will be a strong message to us that the Centrists don't like us if Dean doesn't win I think.
