One of my favorite parts of the local Montgomery County Sentinel newspaper is the “Letters to the Editor” section. There are usually some insane choice comments by the relatively few Trump supporters who grace this D.C. suburban county, which Clinton won, 76% to 20%.
The recent March 22 issue contains some gems, one of which might be a new low even for Trump supporters in this paper. R. Reeves of Silver Spring, Md., starts out stating how “dangerous journalism is in this country,” then accuses the Sentinel, which mostly sticks to local issues, of being “fake news” and worse. He calls Trump a “hero” for “draining the swamp, deporting all the dangerous criminals, destroying sanctuary cities and getting rid of [journalists] like you.”
He also commends Trump for “trying to make amends with Russia and calling out the crook Hillary Clinton and Nuckle-dragging [sic] Obummer." Usually they call Clinton worse names, but Reeves seems to have more hatred towards the former president. It’s amazing to me that conservatives still publicly display their vitriol against Obama after more than a year of the $hit$how going on in the White House, but I guess they are jealous that even Republican scholars rated Obama 24 positions higher than Trump and ahead of W. Bush, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, Kennedy and most others.
I would assume that Reeves is white, but who knows? We know he cannot spell "knuckle," and he likely ironically meant it as an insult to Obama's intelligence and culture, even as Obama's intelligence and wit are superior to his "hero" Trump. But to some African-Americans, calling a black person a "knuckle-dragging" anything is racist, since it could compare blacks to apes, which are known to drag their knuckles. See these references.
My question is, was that comment meant to be a racist slur, if even a subconscious one? I recall the many comments and “jokes” forwarded by Obama haters that refer to him and Michelle Obama as apes and worse. I can’t find “R. Reeves” anywhere on social media to ask him directly, and I did forward the question to the paper’s editor.
In the same issue, F. Francis of Rockville writes that he is “tired of hearing about Civil Rights” and police should have locked up students who walked out in support of stricter gun control measures. He, too, praises Trump as someone who “understands the problems in this country.”
He asks what happened to duty, honor, obeying the law, manners and behavior. Perhaps Reeves can answer what happened to “manners and behavior” after he showed poor manners, at best, and racism, at worst, in his reference to Obama.
As for duty, honor and obeying the law, look no further that what is going on in the White House. When your "leader" is no better than the worst conniving, bigoted, snake-oil salesman, the buck should stop there.
